Description

I am a certified special education teacher with over 25 years of experience teaching in independent schools and as a private tutor. Throughout my career, I have worked with hundreds of students who have learning differences, executive functioning issues, and ADHD. My particular area of expertise is working with students who experience anxiety as a result of their academic struggles. By developing a warm, nurturing, and supportive environment that maximizes success, I help my students become more confident in their abilities and more motivated to approach challenging tasks.

As a Learning Specialist, I have spent my career working with students of all ages who have diverse learning styles and levels of ability. I utilize a multisensory Orton Gillingham approach for teaching basic literacy and writing skills, and I also work with students to strengthen their reading comprehension and critical thinking. Writing is one of the most demanding areas of academic study, and it creates a tremendous amount of anxiety, particularly in students with dysgraphia. I start with basic handwriting, and I use the Orton Gillingham approach to develop spelling and writing skills. Depending on grade and ability, I move into sentence and paragraph writing. I break the writing process into manageable tasks that enable students to generate, organize, and expand upon their ideas in a step-by-step manner that promotes success and boosts confidence, while also improving their critical thinking and expressive language skills.

In addition to working with my students, I also develop strong relationships with parents to help them cope with the challenges that their children face, both at school and at home. I am happy to connect with a child’s classroom teachers to support their efforts, as well. In addition, I am very experienced at analyzing the results of psychoeducational evaluations and can explain them in a way that helps parents gain insights into their children’s academic and emotional needs. By working closely with students, teachers, and parents, I help my students develop a love of learning and a strong work ethic.
